What inspired you to become a surf coach?
Since early 1998, what I enjoyed most was helping my friends experience the same joy I had from surfing since 1988. Back then, we taught ourselves by watching videos of professional surfers. I quickly grasped the techniques and maneuvers, and it became natural for me to break them down and explain them to my friends. At the time, I didn’t even realize that what I was doing was teaching, or pedagogy.
What do you believe sets Salty Souls’ surf coaching experience apart from other surf programs?
At Salty Souls, we don’t just see a group of surfers looking to improve. We see individuals—each with their own unique abilities and needs. Our approach is all about building awareness of your current level, setting personal goals, and offering a customized plan. Our mission is to create conscious surfers, those who can learn from their mistakes and make independent decisions. Our team’s passion for teaching and experience is what sets us apart—it’s not just about learning to pop up on the board.
Can you share a memorable moment with a participant that made a difference for you as a coach?
For some, entering the water feels natural, but for many, due to a lack of exposure or past trauma, it brings up fear, anxiety, and frustration. I’ve always believed that surfing has the power to heal. In 2020, I worked with Muge, and helping her overcome her trauma was one of the most rewarding experiences. Each day was a small victory as she confronted her fears. By the fourth day, we were in the lineup catching waves. I never doubted her physical ability, but this was more than just learning to surf—it was a mental journey. That camp marked the beginning of her healing through surfing.
